What floating floor installation means in Des Moines

Floating means the boards lock to each other and rest on an underlay, with no nails and no glue to the subfloor. The whole field then moves as one sheet with the seasons, which is fine as long as it has somewhere to move to.

That single sheet behaviour is also the limitation. Runs longer than about forty feet, or an L-shape wrapping a stair, need a transition rather than one continuous field.

How floating floor installation goes down

Every wall, every door casing, every pipe and the kitchen island get a gap of roughly a quarter inch, covered afterwards by base shoe that is nailed to the wall and never to the floor.

The underlay is chosen for the substrate, not for comfort. Over an Iowa basement slab it carries a vapour retarder, and over a wood subfloor it is there for sound.

The subfloor gets checked for flatness rather than for strength, because a float bridges dips and then feels hollow where it does.

What floating floor installation costs in Des Moines, IA

Floating is the quickest of the installs and the cheapest labour, which is why it dominates basement projects. The saving disappears if the field has to be broken up with transitions at every doorway.

Where floating floor installation goes wrong in Iowa

The classic failure is base shoe nailed down through the floor, which pins the sheet at the perimeter and produces a hump across the middle of the room by August. It is also the easiest failure to prevent.

Questions we get asked about floating floor installation

Why does it feel hollow in places?

The subfloor is not flat there and the floor is bridging a dip. It is fixed by levelling the substrate, not by the flooring.

Can a floating floor go under a kitchen island?

The island should sit on the subfloor with the floor cut around it and a gap, not on top of the floating field.

How big a gap at the walls?

About a quarter inch, and it goes at every fixed thing in the room, not just the outside walls.
