Des Moines Wood Floors A squeak is movement between two things, and fixing it means working out which two before anything gets screwed down. Free in-home estimate, usually within two working days.

The three candidates are a board moving against the subfloor, the subfloor moving against a joist, and a nail moving in its hole. Each has a different fix and the wrong one makes no difference at all.
The test is to have someone stand on the spot while we listen from below where there is access, which locates it in a minute where guessing from above takes an hour.
From below, a shim and adhesive into the gap between joist and subfloor, or a block screwed alongside, is the invisible fix and the one we prefer.
From above, a screw through the board into the joist, countersunk and plugged with a wood plug in the same species, then cut flush. In a floor that is about to be sanded this disappears entirely.
Powder-driven fasteners and construction screws through the finished face without plugging are quick and permanent and always visible, so we do not use them on a floor you intend to keep.
Charged by time rather than by squeak, because locating is most of the work. A handful of squeaks in one room is an hour or two. A whole floor that moves is a subfloor question.
A newly built Iowa house that squeaks in its second winter is usually framing lumber giving up moisture and shrinking away from the subfloor. That is normal and screwing the floor down solves it. An old house that starts squeaking suddenly is worth looking at properly, because that can be a joist or a support that has moved.
We cover Des Moines, the western suburbs, the Ankeny corridor and the older neighbourhoods inside the city, including and 18 more areas.
Yes. From below where there is access, or from above with a plugged screw.
A fixed squeak stays fixed. New ones appear elsewhere if the cause is seasonal movement in the framing.
Almost never on its own. A floor that also feels bouncy or has a slope is a different conversation.
