Des Moines Wood Floors A screen and recoat abrades the existing finish and adds one new layer on top, which works only while the old finish is still unbroken. Free in-home estimate, usually within two working days.

The floor gets buffed with an abrasive screen to give the old coating a mechanical key, then a single coat goes over it. No wood is removed, so no thickness is spent, and the floor is back in use in a day or two rather than a week.
It only works if the wear has not gone through to the wood. Once there are grey or black patches at a doorway, the finish is gone there and the wood is open, and a recoat over that leaves a permanent dark shadow.
The screen has to reach everywhere the new coat will go, including under the toe kick and along the base shoe, which is hand work with a maroon pad. A missed strip is where the new coat will peel first.
Before anything abrasive touches it the floor is cleaned of any residue from acrylic polish or oil soap. That residue is the single most common reason a recoat does not bond, and it is invisible until the new coat lifts in sheets a month later.
A recoat costs a fraction of a full refinish for the same square footage, and there is no reason to sand a floor that only needs one. Done every four to six years on a busy floor. It means the floor may never need a full sand again.
The Iowa specific version of this failing is a floor cleaned all winter with a steam mop. The moisture gets into the seams, the finish loses adhesion at the board edges, and a recoat then peels along every seam line in a pattern that looks like the floor is drawn on a grid.
We cover Des Moines, the western suburbs, the Ankeny corridor and the older neighbourhoods inside the city, including and 18 more areas.
Look at the highest traffic doorway. If the wood there is still amber and sealed, recoat. If it is grey, bare or stained, that area needs a sand.
Socks the same evening on a water-based coat, furniture back in two to three days.
It fills and hides fine surface scratching. A scratch you can catch with a fingernail is in the wood and stays visible.
