What glue-down wood flooring means in Des Moines

The board is bedded in a trowelled urethane adhesive across the whole slab. There is no cavity and no float, so the floor feels solid underfoot and transmits much less sound than a floating one, which matters in a finished basement.

It only works with engineered board. Solid wood glued to a slab will move across the grain enough to shear the bond.

How glue-down wood flooring goes down

Before any adhesive we test the slab. A calcium chloride test or a relative humidity probe gives a number, and that number decides whether a standard urethane is enough or whether a moisture-blocking adhesive or a separate membrane is required.

The slab is ground flat and clean. Adhesive will not bond to curing compound, old cutback or a dusty surface, and a shot-blast or a grind is cheaper than lifting a failed floor.

Trowel notch size comes off the adhesive datasheet. Too little and there are hollow spots, too much and it squeezes up through the seams.

What glue-down wood flooring costs in Des Moines, IA

Glue-down labour is at the top end of the install range because of the slab preparation, and the adhesive itself is a real line item. What it buys is a floor that behaves like a fastened floor rather than a raft.

Where glue-down wood flooring goes wrong in Iowa

Both failures we see come from skipping the test. A slab left to dry through a bonded floor pushes the adhesive apart in patches, and the floor releases as hollow areas that sound different when you walk them.

Questions we get asked about glue-down wood flooring

Do I have to test the slab?

Yes, and get the number in writing. It selects the adhesive and it is your evidence if the floor fails.

Can solid wood be glued to concrete?

No. Use engineered. Solid moves too much across the grain for the bond to survive.

Is glue-down quieter than floating?

Considerably, which is the main reason to choose it in a finished basement.
